    SMPS & AIA Charlotte Holiday Social & Gingerbuild!

    As part of our annual Holiday Social, SMPS Charlotte has teamed with AIA Charlotte to host Gingerbuild!, a gingerbread design/build/decorate competition! Architects, designers, engineers, contractors, students...anyone is invited to form a team. Get creative; show your delicious talents in a new medium.

    In the hours before the Social starts at 5:00 pm, the icing will be flying as teams build and decorate a structure of their choice. (See below for competition schedule and rules.) Entries will be judged on site by an esteemed jury of AEC professionals in the categories of Best Structure and Best Curb Appeal. Social attendees will also cast their votes to determine the People's Choice. It'll be sweet!

    At the end of the evening, the structures will be donated to a local children's charity.

    There is no charge to participate in the competition, but all team members must also purchase a ticket to the social. AIA members and sponsors will be extended the SMPS member rate; contact Lauren Burn for a coupon code.

    Gingerbread competition rules:
    1. The competition will take place at the Trolley Museum (1507 Camden Road) on Wednesday, December 13th.  Check in is at 3pm.  

    2. This is a timed competition. You will have from 3:30-5:00 pm to construct and decorate your Gingerbread house. The official clock will begin at 3:30 p.m.

    3. A limited number of teams are available. Teams of 2-8 may enter. Please have at least 2 firms represented per team.

    4. You have the option to build your structure off site or onsite. However, all decorating must be done onsite during the allotted time.

    5. Entries should be anonymous to allow for fair judging. When preparing your design, avoid using logos or names from your participating firms.

    6. We will provide one 6-foot table to each team. Otherwise, please bring in all of your own materials. The use of gingerbread, graham crackers, and/or gingerbread house kits for materials is allowed.  No nails, bolts, or other "construction materials" are allowed. Icing should be used to "glue" the decorative elements onto the structure (all decorations must be 100% edible), but non-edible glue is acceptable if used on the base structure only. Use generous amounts of icing, allowing time for each portion to dry and harden.  (We suggest using Royal Icing ( for your "glue". Allow each portion to dry and harden and use generous amounts.)  Competitors should bring any tools and kitchen utensils they wish to use as well. Access to electrical outlets is limited; if you need power, please bring extension cords.

    7. All entries must be constructed on a 14"x14" base.

    8. Once the clock has stopped, the entries will be on display (anonymously), and we will have guest judges on site to decide winners in two different categories:  Best Structure and Best Curb Appeal. We will also have a People's Choice Winner where everyone attending the social (5:00-7:00 pm) will have the opportunity to vote. It is possible for one entry to win all categories. The winners will be recognized at the social afterwards, and the team leader will receive a trophy.

    9. All participants must register by Friday, December 8, at this link. Each member of your team should also have a ticket to the Social for the team registration to be approved.
