November 2014

From the President

It’s hard to believe that November is already here; but as you see all the colorful leaves and feel the crisp cool air during the morning drive – there is no mistaking it.  Typically as this time of year hits and the holiday season is upon us; our lives get even more hectic than they normally are.  Due to this, SMPS Charlotte normally takes a step back from our bigger programs and offers some smaller events.  Here are a few that we hope we will see you at over the next month (more information can be found on the website):

  • Wine Wednesday (11/5)
  • Giving to the Schools (11/13)
  • Breakfast Club (11/18)
  • Group Therapy (11/19)

Another item I’d like to remind everyone of is our Grant Program.  A percentage of each program goes into our grant fund, and this year we have $1,000 to give.  In order to apply for the grant program, you must be an SMPS member in good-standing, along with meeting other criteria.  The application and more information can be found here:  http://smpscharlotte.org/images/SMPS_Charlotte_Grant_2015.pdf. This is great opportunity to receive additional funds to put toward one of the SMPS conferences (Build Business or SERC), the CPSM exam or SMPS University.  Please consider applying.

If you have never been to the Southeastern Regional Conference (SERC), you should consider going in 2015.  The conference will take place in the great music city of Nashville, TN in March.  The conference committee is currently looking for volunteers to join committees such as Sponsorships, Communications, Programs, etc.  If you have interest in getting involved, contact me and I will connect you to the right people.

Finally, I hope to see you at our Holiday Party at Red Rocks on Providence Road. This year we decided to have a sit down dinner; and we think this will be a nice change.  The evening will start with a socializing hour at 5pm, and end with some surprises during dessert.  In continuing the tradition of the past few years, we again will be donating a portion of the registrations to a well-deserved organization - Classroom Central.  We will provide them with a cash donation, but in addition we are asking that everyone consider bringing some classroom supplies (i.e. pencils, pens, scissors, notebook paper, markers, glue sticks, etc.) to donate also.  I look forward to seeing everyone at the Holiday Party or another event coming up!

About the Marketing Communications Awards

The SMPS Marketing Communications Awards Program is the longest-standing, most prestigious awards competition that recognizes excellence in marketing communications produced by professional services firms in the design and building industry. The program provides an unparalleled opportunity for professionals to showcase their best marketing practices and to educate the industry about the critical role of marketing in a successful firm. All finalists are honored on stage and with an award during the SMPS Awards Gala on August 20 in Los Angeles, held in conjunction with Build Business, the Society's annual conference. Winning entries will be on display throughout the Conference, August 18-21, for the benefit of the attendees. In addition, winning firms are promoted to industry media and building industry associations, in SMPS publications including Marketer, on the SMPS Web site and social media channels, and in DesignIntelligence’s Almanac of Architecture & Design.

Did You Know???

Did you know that when you paid your application and dues fees to join SMPS, you not only became a member of SMPS National, you became a member of every Region and every Chapter in the organization – across the United States and Canada??

Well, you did! You have affiliated with SMPS Charlotte and the Southeastern Region of SMPS, but are a member for anything you might want to attend with SMPS – anywhere!

So, what does this really mean to you…

Whether you are attending another Chapter meeting, a Regional meeting anywhere, or a National Conference (Build Business), National training class, etc., you would sign up as an SMPS member and save some money!

Many of you travel to other parts of the region and country, and many others of you have offices in your firm that you might visit on occasion that might have SMPS Chapters nearby. So, if you are going to be in the area, you might check to see if there is an SMPS event going on you don’t want to miss.

One way I keep up with this is that I receive several other eBlasts from other chapters. Here’s where YOU can sign up to receive a few of those too – and these are close-by.

SMPS Research Triangle (bottom left of web page “Join Our Mailing List”):  http://www.smpstriangle.org/

SMPS Palmetto: Contact Director of Communications:  Catherine Yaw, cyaw@choateco.com

SMPS Virginia (bottom left of web page “Join Our Mailing List”) :  http://www.smpsva.org/

SMPS Atlanta (bottom right of web page – “Subscribe to Our Mailing List”):  http://smpsatl.org/

One last thing, if you have someone interested in receiving SMPS Charlotte’s information, they can sign up on OUR front page here (it says, “Click here to join our mailing list”):  http://smpscharlotte.org/
