September 2014

From the President

Are you using your SMPS membership to your advantage? Are you involved in the local chapter? If your answer is no, then I would like to push you to join a committee. I spent many years in the background of SMPS Charlotte, attending a meeting here and there and always feeling a little intimidated. Everyone seemed to know each other and also know a lot more about the A/E/C industry than I did.

I finally took the step to join a committee and from that point on many doors were opened, and many friendships were gained.  And today – here I am as your President, encouraging you to do the same. Being involved will help you grow personally and professionally.

SMPS Charlotte has many volunteer opportunities, and commitment level varies. We understand that this is volunteer work, and we will work with you, our goal is to not overwhelm anyone. If you are interested in learning about any of our committees, please contact myself or the following individuals:

The Southeastern Regional Conference (SERC) is also looking for volunteers. The conference will be held in Nashville, TN in March 2015. Volunteers are needed for planning the conference as well as during the conference. Please contact Keri Phillips ( in Nashville if you are interested.

Finally, October is packed with upcoming events:

  • Wednesday, October 1st – Wine Wednesday
  • Thursday, October 9th – Program event on Green Globes
  • Tuesday, October 16th – Breakfast Club
  • Wednesday, October 24th – Education Event on Content Marketing

We’ve all been told, you get out of something, what you put into it. So please consider volunteering to get the most out of your SMPS membership.

We would like to congratulate our Immediate Past President Janet Brooks, CPSM for being selected to serve on the SMPS National Certification Committee for 2014-2015.  This committee oversees the certification program for CPSM (Certified Professional Services Marketer.  CPSM’s are recognized as having the experience and knowledge to generate profitable business in the architectural, engineering, and construction marketplace. To achieve this designation, certification candidates must meet educational and experience requirements, pass a rigorous written examination, and pledge to abide by the CPSM Code of Ethics. The process validates the individual’s mastery of and ability to apply critical business development knowledge in an industry that values certification.  The committee will assist in developing an online study program to assist individuals who are unable to participate in a chapter-offered study group; promote and communicate the value of certification; and update and improve the item-writing database.
