Extreme Mixed Use

October 13, 2020
11:45 AM - 1:00 PM

Zoom Meeting

Join SMPS Charlotte for our October Program featuring Stephen Overcash, RA, LEED AP; Principal and Founder of ODA Architecture and David Walters, RIBA; Professor Emeritus of Architecture and Urban Design at UNC Charlotte, as they discuss Extreme Mixed Use from both a practitioner and educator’s point of view.  During this discussion, Stephen and David will take a look at the history, present day and future popularity of Mixed Use and why Extreme Mixed Use is so important.

Meet Stephen:

Stephen received his Bachelors of Architecture from Mississippi State University.  Post-graduation, Stephen relocated to Charlotte and founded ODA Architecture in 1984. ODA Architecture has been on the leading edge of New Urbanism, Extreme Mixed Use, Urban Planning and Small Town Planning for over 20 years.  Horizontal and vertical mixed use buildings and communities complement both Sustainable Design (LEED) and WELL Building Design principles.

ODA Architecture has designed many Mixed Use Developments throughout the southeast.  A few of these include the Ayrsley Edge City (Charlotte, NC), Matthews, NC Town Center, Harrisburg, NC Town Center and Southern Commons in Cayce, SC.

Futuristically, ODA Architecture is advocating for vertical mixed use in flexible urban buildings that can change uses in response to varying economic and market demands.

Meet David:

David Walters is a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects and holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in architecture from the University of Newcastle, in north-east England. He worked there as a community activist in the 1960s, qualified as an architect in 1971 and started teaching in 1976 at what is now Plymouth University. He has practiced and taught in England, Spain, Italy, and since 1983 in America, including spells in Arkansas, Mississippi, Dallas, and Oklahoma. Since 1990, Walters has taught at UNC Charlotte, where he was a tenured professor, the founding Director of the Master of Urban Design Program, and the program’s leader for its first six years before retiring from academia in 2014. As an Emeritus Professor at UNC Charlotte, Walters has continued to teach graduate level courses on mixed-use urban design and community planning, urban history, and form-based zoning.

In 2014, Walters was voted “Overall Outstanding Leader” in Sustain Charlotte’s Community Sustainability Awards. His most recent award, in 2018 as a member of a Stantec Urban Places team, was the International Downtown Association Award of Excellence for the Vision Plan for Charlotte's South End mixed-use district.
