Join SMPS Charlotte for a panel discussion featuring Women in Leadership led by Amy Sullivan Hicks, President & CEO of the Associated Builders and Contractors of the Carolinas.  Amy will be guiding the conversation with panelists Sloan Kormelink, Vice President of Business Development with Edifice General Contractors; Mellissa Oliver, Associate, Senior Engineering Designer with LandDesign and Jessica Rossi, AICP, Senior Economist and Planner with Kimley-Horn, as they discuss their journey to success as women in the A/E/C industry. 

Meet the Speakers:

Moderator: Amy Sullivan Hicks, President & CEO

Associated Builders and Contractors of the Carolinas

Amy’s experience in the industry spans over 20 years.  She recently was named the President/CEO of the Associated Builders and Contractors of the Carolinas.  Prior to this position, she served as the Director of Business Development for ECS Southeast.  Her prior experience and leadership in professional organizations includes being one of the founders of CarolinaBUILT (and serving on their Executive Board), serving on the Board for NAIOP, and serving on the Executive Board for Mecklenburg County Council Boy Scouts of America (currently as Vice President of Marketing and Communications).  Amy was named the Charlotte Regional Commercial Board of Realtors’ 2013 Corporate Associate of the Year and she was nominated as one of the Mecklenburg Times 50 Most Influential Women, Class of 2016. 

Panelist: Sloan Kormelink, Vice President of Business Development

Sloan has been with EDIFICE since 2016 and has been instrumental in expanding its footprint in the Carolinas.  She leads EDIFICE’S business development and drives awareness of construction services for industrial, K-12/higher education, municipal, office/corporate interiors, medical, senior living, and entertainment market sectors.  Her efforts have contributed to EDIFICE’S recognition as Charlotte’s #1 Middle Market Leader.  Sloan’s leadership strengthens EDIFICE’S relationships with its valued clients and partners, allowing the company to build upon the tremendous growth experienced over the past few years.  Sloan has developed a best-in-class business development team and continuously pushes EDIFICE to implement a sales-centric culture within the organization.

Panelist: Jessica Rossi, AICP, Senior Economist and Planner


With more than 16 years of real estate market research, planning, and public engagement experience, Jessica brings a comprehensive perspective to all consulting assignments. She works on a wide variety of visioning and economic development assignments for local governments and regional agencies. Additionally, developer and investor clients rely on Jessica’s insight to determine demand for commercial and residential projects and to choose specific concepts to maximize economic development, marketability, and value. Her experience working with public- and private-sector interests is useful in creating innovative solutions to complex issues. As a national resource for Kimley-Horn, Jessica’s leadership has guided high-quality and innovative planning strategies that are grounded in a market reality.

Panelist: Mellissa Oliver, Associate, Senior Engineering Designer


As an Associate and Senior Designer at LandDesign, Mellissa works with multi-disciplinary civil engineers, landscape architects, urban planners and many others to lead the way in the land development industry. Mellissa’s thirst for urban residential and commercial development has led her to work on defining projects in the Charlotte area, including The RailYard SouthEnd, Refinery on West Morehead and the LEED Certified 500 East Morehead. In addition, Mellissa was presented with Commercial Real Estate for Women’s annual Rising Star Award and was recognized by Charlotte Agenda as a Top 30 under 30 professional. Mellissa is Vice Chair on the Board of Directors for the ACE Mentor Program of Charlotte. Mellissa’s latest accomplishment was being honored with UNCC’s 10 Under 10 Alumni Award for her contribution to the Charlotte community, her outstanding ability to work through any challenge *2020*, her dedicated leadership, and continuously growing passion for land development.
